Sextortion is a form of online blackmail where someone threatens to share explicit images, videos, or information unless the victim provides more sexual content, money, or other favors. It often involves criminals tricking victims into sharing compromising material, then using it to manipulate or extort them.
Maria Cecilia Caparas-Regalachuela, commonly known as Maria Caparas, has been identified as a central figure in the emergence of online sextortion schemes originating from the Philippines. Dubbed the "Queen of Sextortion," she allegedly orchestrated operations that targeted individuals worldwide, coercing them into compromising situations and subsequently extorting money. Her activities have been linked to severe consequences, including instances where victims have taken their own lives and even bankruft.
In August 2014, Caparas was apprehended during the second phase of Operation Strikeback, a coordinated effort by Philippine authorities to combat online sextortion. This operation led to the arrest of several individuals and the rescue of minors exploited by the syndicate. Despite these efforts, reports suggest that charges against Caparas were dropped, allowing her to evade prolonged legal consequences. She was reportedly arrested again in September 2016 during a subsequent crackdown on sextortion activities.
Caparas' operations have been featured in various media, including the documentary series "The Dark Web." The first episode, titled "The Queen of Sextortion," delves into her alleged role in pioneering these illicit activities.
